Emilie Sloan Seattle was founded by a local Seattle woman who was unhappy with the selection of reusable shopping bags available at the local stores. Lisa Murphy, a mother of three and devout seamstress, decided to make her own totes with a couple key principles in mind:

They must:

  • Be stylish
  • Be functional - with pockets, key clasp and lining
  • Have rainproof exterior
  • Not scream - "I'm a reusable grocery tote!"
  • Be able to carry anything from groceries to files from work

While shopping for groceries at her local market, Lisa was asked repeatedly where she got her great tote. Within a couple months, Emilie Sloan came to life and set out to be a leader in quality totes. Emilie Sloan now has several designs of totes—everything from Shopping to Cosmetic Bags, with more totes and fabric designs coming out soon.

The name Emilie Sloan comes from a combination of Lisa's daughters' names, Emilie & Madison Sloan.

As cute as the reusable totes are, we chose to carry the cosmetic cases because customers have been asking for them for ages! Mint Julep has the large and small cosmetic bags in all locations and on www.shopmintjulep.com

Mimi & Marge Jewelry... Stunning!

Check out one of our newest jewelry lines, Mimi & Marge! I love all the pieces so much, it's hard for me to pick my favorite... The rose earrings look like delicate antique pieces, but the bacon and eggs necklace combines my two favorite things in one- jewelry AND breakfast food!!

It's no wonder that Mimi & Marge pieces are being spotted left and right among the celebs...

weddings-a-go-go

As these lovely temperatures heat up to the point where we dare bare our legs again in this fine city, we find ourselves with a handful of invitations to the most fun events of the season: weddings.

We Mint Juleps have wedding festivities to attend (my own dear brother has just gotten engaged!!), and we see all of our lovely shoppers coming in looking for THE dress(es!) to wear to the wedding(s!) that you all will be attending all summer as well.

So, since we can help you find that lovely dress to wear (psst! you should see some of the new Tibi and Nanette Lepore that we've recently gotten if you haven't already) so that you can look your best -I thought I would point all of you wedding guests in a different direction to acquire the rest of your needs for those exciting and fun events you will all be sharing in festivities all summer.

So, here is my proposition for a very safe, very non-bank breaking way to find a gift and get inspired for all of those weddings that you have lined up. Not only does this event sound fun, but it will also be a fun and interesting way to support your local Boston designers. May I present:::

Gumballs Doing Good

Several years ago, I was given this shiny, beautiful gumball machine as a birthday gift from Steph and Travis. Clearly, they know their audience, right?!? The photo is a bit blurry, but this stunning girl sits at about 4 feet tall and serves as our Walmart style "greeter" at our Brookline location. For a mere quarter, you get a yummy gumball and a trip down memory lane to the days when good behavior at the grocery store would be recognized with a treat from the magical candy dispensers at the exit of the store.

From the minute I got my gumball machine, there was no doubt in my mind, my gumball money would go to charity. Let me tell you, those quarters have really added up over the years and I've proudly made donations to many local charites and food pantries.

So the next time you're in the Brookline store, enjoy a gumball and know that your quarter is going to a good cause.

An easy bread recipe?

The last time I baked bread I forgot about the rising dough. This resulted in a blob of bread dough, sliding Steven King style across my countertop and half way down my cabinet door. Needless to say I was THRILLED to find this easy recipe for bread that I actually end up eating and not cleaning off my kitchen floor.

Pre-heat oven to 375 and lightly grease your bread pan.

Mix together:

3 cups flour (I like to use 1 1/2 cups white and 1 1/2 cups whole wheat)
1/4 cup packed brown sugar
3 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt

Now for the fun part.

Pour in a beer. Bottle or can. Of ANY beer you choose. I love Sam Adams Cherry Wheat which gives my bread a fruity salty flavor but I've used everything from Guinness to Budlight (don't judge, it was in my roommate's mini-fridge!). It usually tastes great!

Mix the beer into your dry ingredients until everything is blended. The dough will still be slightly chunky and this is fine.

If you're okay with some extra calories, put some butter over the top of the bread. This gives it a crispy outside that's simply delicious!

Bake for 45-60 minutes.

Have fun and let me know of any beers you recommend trying!
